The information you need to protect yourself from COVID-19 that they're not sharing
Knowledge is power

As everyone tries to do their best at staying informed and mindful during the pandemic, it is no surprise that the news is pumping information about COVID-19 out like crazy. Even more concerning than the information they are telling us about COVID-19, is the stuff that certain media outlets aren’t saying. Since COVID-19 is not just an issue affecting the US, but the entire global population, it makes sense to see how other countries are experiencing these unprecedented times in comparison to the United States. To call these new findings shocking would be an understatement.
France, for instance, has reported that 85% of the patients hospitalized were either overweight or obese. The fact that the US publications aren’t addressing this is extremely concerning. Even more so when you consider that nearly 40% of the US population is considered to be obese, and roughly 70% are overweight. Other startling facts regarding coronavirus in different countries include:
-
Obesity puts a person at risk for a number of acute and chronic diseases and COVID-19 is no different. Those with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of greater than 30 have been affected by the virus disproportionately.
-
Being obese brings a higher risk of hospitalization due to covid-19 than other diseases such as cancer or even chronic pulmonary disease.
-
Studies have found that obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes contributed to most hospitalizations in covid-19 cases.
-
Among the obese population that had to be hospitalized, the majority were under the age of 60.
-
Risk of acute or critical care is twice as important when you are obese.
-
A recent study showed that obese people are 33% more at risk of dying than those with a lower BMI. Some studies even show double that risk.
Please know that I don’t tell you this to scare you, but rather, inform you and to give you the power of knowledge to protect both yourself and your loved ones. With anything, being proactive rather than reactive is always the best way to stay safe. With no end to coronavirus in sight, taking our health into our hands NOW is absolutely imperative.
Immediate actions that you can take to improve your health in order to protect yourself:
-
Stay active and get regular exercise.
-
Eat healthy fruits and vegetables.
-
Avoid processed foods and sugars.
-
Eat more complex carbs (like whole grains and sweet potatoes) vs. simple carbs (like bagels and white bread)
-
Seek additional help if you are unsure where to begin to get your weight under control.
-
Don’t try to change everything at once. Being healthy is a life-style so adding new habits in a way that will last you a lifetime is key.
If you are currently already struggling with your weight and don’t know where to begin on the weight loss journey, not to worry. Remember it is progress over perfection. Start by incorporating some of these weight-loss friendly foods to your diet:
-
Leafy Greens: Like collard greens, kale and spinach. Besides being low calorie and packed with healthy nutrients, these guys are also loaded with fiber which helps keep you feeling full.
-
Fatty Fish: Such as salmon, sardines and trout. These are a great source of iodine. A nutrient that is important to an optimally functioning thyroid. Taking care of your thyroid helps keep your metabolism high.
-
Cruciferous Veggies: Such as cauliflower, broccoli, and brussel sprouts. Besides being another great source of fiber, these veggies also contain a decent amount of protein which helps you feel full and provides you with plenty of energy.
-
Grapefruit: Studies have shown that consuming grapefruit can aid in insulin resistance which directly affects fat storage and weight loss.
Remember that knowledge is power. Knowing that metabolic health is one of the main contributing factors to severe or fatal COVID-19 symptoms should feel empowering. It is less scary when we have more information and knowledge, and now we can take action towards prevention. Furthermore, this is one more example of how the way we eat and treat our bodies truly does create our health. Hopefully this can be a great motivator to take control of your weight, your health, and your life.
