7 lessons learnt during the pandemic
Health, healing, lifestyle

As things reopen and people begin to report back to work, it is easy to have the
feeling that things are on their way back to “normal”. But before we are too quick to
wish for things to be back to the way they used to be, let us consider all the positive
new habits we acquired and lessons that we have learned from these unpredictable
times.
1. Your lifestyle directly affects your immune system
These days, there is a lot of heightened attention surrounding immune health and function. This
pandemic has been a glaring example of just how vital our immune system is in our everyday
lives, and it has allowed us to focus on the lifestyle choices that support a healthy immune
response. One of the best ways to support the immune system is through our diet. Some great
foods to eat more of include:
● Garlic: natural antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.
● Berries: loaded with tons of antioxidants that help support immune function.
● Mushrooms: high in selenium and vitamin B.
● Lentils, peans and beans: high amounts of zinc help fight off viral infections.
● Broccoli sprouts: contains sulforaphane, a powerful immune booster that has been
shown
to increase immune response to viral infections like the flu.
2. Our connection to one another is vital
During social distancing, we saw how important spending time with our family and friends is to
us when we suddenly could not. Besides being a source of joy and happiness, human
connection is also important to our physical and mental health. Studies have found that isolation
can pose multiple health risks, including:
● Depression.
● Anxiety.
● Insomnia.
● Poor immune function.
● Cardiovascular disease.
And more!
Fortunately, one incredible thing we can take from the past few months is our
creativity in ways to connect without physically connecting. From zoom parties and drive by
birthday celebrations to facebook groups
for like-minded individuals, we may have been socially
distanced but came closer than ever together through this!
3. A lot more can be done virtually than we thought
Almost overnight, businesses were forced to adapt to the new social-distanced norm and some
of their discoveries and innovations changed the way we will do things from here on out. Entire
businesses began operating and serving their clientele virtually. Gyms like TriFIT Wellness
added live-stream classes to their roster and plan to keep them permanently, as we saw this
was a real want for people. Without a doubt, these times really motivated us to turn to
technology and changed what we considered normal.
4. We made eating at home fun and exciting again
When restaurants closed their doors, we were forced to get creative with our meals! Some of us
turned to recipe books and facebook groups for inspiration and ideas in the kitchen. While
others decided to take a different approach and support their local community by taking
advantage of pick-up and delivery
options that were being offered. Even now as things begin to
open, we see people turning to intimate, at-home dinners prepared by a chef for their
celebrations rather than going out.
5. The importance of hygiene, pandemic or not
If there is one major take away that we can gain from all that is going on, it is that absolute
necessity of washing our hands. Germs that lead to viruses have the potential to live on hard
surfaces for up to 24 hours. That’s why with all the door handles we are turning and gas pumps
we are touching, making sure we are properly washing our hands with warm soap and water for
at least 20 seconds.
6. The importance of doing things for the greater good
This was such a profound example of how sometimes we have to make sacrifices, not
necessarily for our benefit but for the benefit of others and society. In this case, some people
may feel less at-risk than others but nonetheless, must take all of the same precautions to
prevent infecting someone in a less healthy state. We saw individuals and communities as a
whole come together and make decisions, not based on individual gains but everyone as a
whole.
7. A new found gratitude for our health
Although times have been trying, there is no doubt that there is still so much to be grateful for.
We saw entire industries bend over backwards for us. We were reminded how nothing is
guaranteed and at a moment anything can change. Most importantly though, it showed us not to
take our health for granted. For some people, this was the encouragement they needed to begin
living a healthy lifestyle.
