September Is Child Obesity Awareness Month

According to the CDC, the Center for Disease Control and prevention, obesity has more than double in children and quadrupled in adolescents during those last 30 years. Even if some cities have seen some improvements, the overall trend is, unfortunatly, on the rise and the overweight and obese children are heavier than ever.
The ascertainment is that children eat more calories than they spend.
Sounds like an evidence. So what got us there? What happened those last 30 years?
The two major elements that took us there are nutrition and physical activity.
.
- On a nutritional point of view: there are more of what we call "empty calories" which are foods that pile up calories without bringing nutrients. They are soda drinks, food items with added sugarsand their access has really been made easier and easier.
- On a physical activity point of view: the big one is SCREENS, all of them everywhere, in any sizes. They keep our children sited, laying, not moving at all.
.
The very first consequences are self esteem and image problem, joint discomfort, asthma, anxiety, depression and bullying.
.
On a long term, the CDC is telling us "Children who have obesity are more likely to become adults with obesity [which] is associated with increased risk of a number of serious health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. If children have obesity, their obesity and disease risk factors in adulthood are likely to be more severe."
.
So a healthier diet and more physical activity are the right ways to start. One step at a time, especially with children keeping in mind that as you shift to healthier habits, you will push away chances of A LOT of diseases, giving more chances to your child to feel better, not only physically but also emotionnally.
Removing the items that are harmful and introducing healthier ones. Saving time to play outside, go for a walk, a bike ride... As you anchor those habits in your children's lives, there are also more chances that they will keep them as grown ups!
Switching to whole grains is always a good start because it does not require any work!
Then you can add vegetables and replace those not so healthy snacks with fruits.
.
Here is a simple recipe to get you started that can be declined in many different flavors and also can be fun to build with your children
.
VEGETABLES-MEAT AND FRUIT SKEWERS
.
- dices vegetables: bell peppers, zucchini, squash, eggplant, whole mushroom, grape tomatoes, onions, broccoli, carrots...
- diced meats: chicken, beef, shrimp, fish (any one)
- fruit slices: peaches, pineaple, mango, apricots
. Marinate the vegetables in a little oil and Italian herbs (or fresh ones)
. marinate the different meats separatly with a little oil, thyme and shallots
. marinate the fruits in lemon juice, vanilla or ginger
. build your skewers following your preferences
Children are always so proud to make their own or build one for mamma! It makes them also more willing to eat them afterwards...
. Grill 15 minutes turning them regularly. If you do not have a BBQ, you can broil them turning on a regular basis, be careful not to burn yourself!
Bon appetit!
