Diet and Health: A Major Concern for Everyone
There has never been so many overweight and obese adults and children in America.
A better access to affordable healthier food option has become a top priority for american people.
When you consider that 4 of the major causes of death (coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes) are diet related, it only makes sense that it concerns us all.
So here are a few tips to help lower the bill on healthier options:
- Cooking instead of ready meals: 1st, ready options often contain more sodium, fat and preservatives. when you prepare a meal from scratch you only use whole foods and you know exactly what you put in it. you are in control of what is in 2nd: an identical meal will cost less prepared at home than bought elsewhere
- If fresh is too pricy, go for frozen vegetables, they are real vegetables, they will save you time and you can use a portion of it with no fear it will turn bad until you use the rest a few days or couple weeks later. They are a good alternative.
- The pulse family: beans, lentils and peas. Rich in protein and fiber, they are also packed with vitamins. On a price stand point, a bag of dried beans or lentil is cheap and will take you a long way. They will fill you up and are easy to prepare. Add a handfull or two in a soup, in a casserole or as a salad.
- Go seasonal: you will get the best price and quality. Some stores offer nice specials on vegetables and fruits that are the peak of the season, take advantage of them.
All of that might take extra time... If you are ok with leftovers, you can cook larger quantities so you have your meals ready for a few days. If you are NOT ok with left overs, cooking more will not take much extra time and you can freeze and enjoy ready healthy options the following week!.
One step at a time, one day at a time!
Don't put too much pressure on you, get another family member involved and enjoy every bite!
