FOOD ALLERGY AWARENESS WEEK
LEARN MORE AND SHARE!

Let's look at a few facts about food allergies:
There are eight main allergens which responsible for 90% of all the food allergy reactions, they are:
Peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, soy, wheat, milk, fish and shellfish.
A food allergy is a response from the immune system that mistakes an ingredient as harmful.
Food allergies are VERY serious and in certain cases can be FATAL, they must be taken very seriously.
Unfortunately there are no known treatments to food allergies and the safest thing to do is AVOID the foods you are allergic to.
That involves a lot of label reading! There can be a lot of ingredients involved in the making of processed foods and the manufacturing process can also change, that is why, even if you are used to a certain brand for the product you are using, check the label every single time you buy it as some modifications can occur and you want to make sure you are SAFE.
If you prepare food at home, you are more in control of what goes into it, one important thing to keep in mind: CROSS-CONTAMINATION. What can prevent that is proper pan, pots, utensils and hand washing, as well as all preparation surfaces.
Having a child at home with food allergies, I simply don't have anything that contain the incriminated allergens, it is the easiest way to go and none of us feel deprived of anything. This has been the safest, especially with younger kids, now that my son is older he knows how to take care of his allergies and is very responsible, the risk of accidentally ingesting an ingredient he is not supposed to have is really low.
Educating is also a big part and this week is a great way to bring awareness in the community. I found out that children are usually the best advocates: I used to do a presentation at my son's school about allergies to show children how it can hide everywhere and why we want to be careful, not sharing, etc... Those pairs were the first ones educating their own parents, making sure their friend would be safe and not exposed to harmful allergens!
