9 steps to get started with a healthy diet
and stick to it!

What is the importance of a healthy
diet?
When you make
the decision to adopt a healthy diet, you make weight management easier, lower
your risks of diabetes, cholesterol and heart conditions, give your brain
better fuel, improve your energy level and get on a path to a happier you. Learning
more about healthy diet will help you get the motivation to embrace this new
way of life.
1- Get a team : you don’t have to go through it alone. When you involve people around you, you also make yourself accountable towards them which is a great way to be more successful. Having people on your side might also make them realize this could be good for them…and there you are doing good around you!
2- Take a step back and go through your habits : foods, meals, exercise, snacks, time, challenges. It will help you become aware of what your present habits are. It is a great way to identify where your struggles lie and find solutions for them. You can share those information with your doctor and also with people around you to get some support. Keep in mind you are doing yourself a favor.
3- Changing your habits : cleaning what could be tempting and is not good anyway; those changes will not always come easy so you don’t have to add with extra temptation. If keeping some of them feels less stressful for a couple weeks, it’s ok; sometimes taking it slower allows you to settle those improvements and feel more comfortable with your ability to reach your goals. Shopping: yes, it will have to be modified too. As you prepare your shopping list while you make your meal plan, you can decide to have your groceries delivered, at least at the beginning so you avoid temptations. Making a list will help keeping you on track.
4- Portion control and meal composition : is especially important when it comes to foods which are heavier in calories. Half of your plate should be composed of vegetables and fruits, the other half protein and a complex carb, dairy shall also be part of it.
5- Meal planning : when you plan ahead, you can plan your shopping and make sure you will follow through. Meal planning is also a great way to save time, avoid the last minute dinner plans that can turn into on the go not so healthy options. Having healthy choices on hands is perfect to stick to your plan!
6- Read labels: limiting process foods, it can be high in sodium, carbs and fats. Getting more familiar with food composition will bring more awareness on what you really consume and help you make the efforts of preparing your own meals.
7- Set reasonable goals : you don’t have to do it all at once. For some people it might be hard to make all those changes at the same time and our goal is to succeed. Embrace every accomplishment, welcome every progress, let the “feel good” emotion sink in and remember it each time you doubt, it will help go through. On the long term, you will realize that all these changes become easier.
8- Monitor & adjust: Keep track of your new meals, first this will document all the great efforts you are doing, second it is also a helpful when you need ideas for your meals. It can help figuring out if some specific goods do not play along with you very well, after all there will be quite a few new ingredients and it is important to know what works well for you.
9- Be curious and enjoy! Try new ingredients, have fun with your meals, be adventurous and enjoy the adventure!
