March is nutrition month

What is nutrition? It is a science that studies how nutrients and other substances / components in foods impact / affect us, how they relate to health and disease and their relationship/connection with health and disease. It also explores why you choose certain foods and the type of diet you eat.
So there is an actual science studying the impact of food on our bodies…. That tells you how important food is!
As we might not all turn out to be scientist, this month can at least bring awareness on what we eat, how it impacts us, our health, our future and arise some thought on how to improve nutrition in our lives so that our lives get better.
We don’t necessarily think about food as a science, like we don’t think about gravity or aerodynamism as we are driving, it is just part of our lives. The food we ingest though is far way more than the pleasure it gives us and can have long term consequences in one way or another
Yes, we all have our habits, the foods we were raised on, what we like, share, what makes us feel good, trends, our mood, where we live, the seasons, etc…
There are general guidelines that can help staying on track and making sure we get all the nutrients we need:
-My plate, that we formerly knew as my pyramid, gives us a way clearer picture of what we need everyday: ½ of the plate should consist of vegetables or fruits, the other half protein and grains and last family, some dairy.
I really like that layout much better since it allows us to visualize what our intake should be.
-Rainbow: Get all the colors of the rainbow! Yes dark greens are really good but there are many other nutrients in different colored vegetables and fruits, from the white turnip or parsnip, to the yellow squash, orange carrot, red beets, purple cabbage, red tomato to the light green avocado and dark green spinach among others. Plenty of choices laying in different colors and offering different nutrients.
-Diversity: change things around! Try new ingredients or cooking methods and most of all HAVE FUN!
