February is National Heart Month
Let's have a good heart

February is heart month, not just because of Valentine’s day but to bring awareness on heart conditions and stroke so that everyone can take actions for a better heart.
A healthy life style is essential to maintain your heart in good conditions. The American heart association ( https://healthyforgood.heart.org/ ) gives us essential guidelines to help reach that goal:
Eat smart, add colors, move more and be well; weight and stress management as well as no smoking are essential to achieving an overall healthy lifestyle.
It sounds like we all know that yet won’t do it…. Why is that?
For some it might be looking at a mountain to climb, too much at once, discouraging, not sure how to start and what to do…. Overall a bit overwhelming, especially if you already just had a heart condition diagnosed.
So, let’s break it down to smaller, simple steps, each and every one of them counts, each and every step you take is a success!
1-Eat smart: make the right choices, nobody says it’s easy, once thing for sure: when you start eating healthier (less sugar, less fat, etc..) you actually FEEL BETTER, yes you do and you want to let that feeling sink in so that next time you need to make a choice you can remember that great feeling.
You can also reduce the portions, it’s a great start, way to often plates are huge so maybe ask for a to go box before you start your meal when you are at the restaurant and put a share of your meal in it, now you know you will not eat too much!
2-2- Add colors: This one is easier because it is also fun. It is a great way to discover new flavors, try ingredients you don’t know and play with them. If you go with the rainbow, you will add a large variety that will bring many different vitamins and minerals essentials to a good health. Fruits can satisfy your sweet tooth as well as a brownie, the impacts on your body are different!
3-Move more: No one says you have to sign up for the next marathon and certainly not me! Begin at the level you are comfortable with and follow your doctor’s instructions too. It might be hard in the first place, yes you might – and most certainly will- have to push yourself to exercise and you can be PROUD of it! Here again, let’s take small steps, set time aside, doesn’t have to be a lot, for exercising and write it down in a log so you can be proud of it! Before you know it, you will need that exercise time because, once again, it makes you FEEL GOOD.
It could also be the perfect time to sign up for that gym class you’ve always wanted to do, do it!
4-Be well: “create balance and vitality through self care”: take time for YOU: YOU ARE IMPORTANT, appreciate the efforts you are doing and be proud of them.
As you are taking that road to a healthier you, be aware, grateful and proud of your journey!
